Breast Implants & Breast Feeding

A lot of women ask if they can breast feed after Breast Augmentation Surgery. The answer is a resounding yes. For the vast majority of women who have a breast augmentation, breastfeeding is feasible. Although, it must be noted that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) reported that any type of breast surgery can interfere with lactation.

When Silicone was taken off the market there was some fear that breastfeeding with silicone implants would endanger the child. There have been, studies performed to show that breast feeding is safe with implants. For more on this, please visit: Breast feeding with implants

Some concerns are placed on implant placement, and incision site. If breastfeeding is a high priority, consider the inframammary incision and avoid the nipple incision to decrease potential interference with future breast feeding. Placing the implant over the muscle, or sub glandular, allows the implant to reside under the milk ducts and therefore enables a great chance of breast feeding.

Breastfeeding is a growing concern with patients who have had breast augmentation surgery. As more single women who have not finished childbearing or have even begun childbearing are having breast augmentations, the concern for compatibility of the two arises.

It is very important to discuss your plans of breastfeeding at the time of your consultation. Dr Peterson will be able to work with you, to get the best possible results, even if you are not planning on having children anytime in the near future.
