Breast Reduction

Conveniently located to serve the areas of Honolulu, HI

At the Athena Clinic, breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, can help women whose breast size causes discomfort or medical problems. These problems may include back and neck pain, skin irritation, skeletal deformities, and breathing problems. The procedure can also help women feel more confident and less self-conscious about the size of their breasts.

The Surgery

At Athena Clinic in Honolulu, Hawaii, breast reduction techniques may vary on a patient to patient basis. In the most common technique, our surgeons make an anchor-shaped incision around the areola. This incision extends downward, following the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast. Through the incision, our surgeon removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin, and adjusts the nipple to its new position. Our surgeon then reshapes the breast and carefully stitches the incision, his goal being the least amount of scarring. In certain cases, the vertical part of the scar can be eliminated. Stitches are usually removed in one to three week’s time. At Athena Clinic in Honolulu, Hawaii, breast reduction surgery may be performed in our office or at a hospital, and is an outpatient surgery. The breast reduction procedure itself takes between two and four hours and is done under a general or local anesthetic.

After Reduction Mammoplasty in Oahu

After breast reduction surgery, an elastic bandage or surgical bra wraps the breasts to provide comfort and support. Our surgeons remove the bandage within a few days while the surgical bra stays on until the bruising and swelling subsides. Patients may experience minor pain in the days following breast reduction surgery, although this subsides in seven to ten days. Most women can return to work after two weeks.
